So here’s a post we hoped we’d never write… the issue of Trail that goes on sale today will be the final ever printed issue of the magazine.
Almost 36 years after we first launched as Trail Walker in 1990, we’re sadly bringing down the curtain on what is still Britain’s biggest-selling and (in our humble opinion) very best magazine dedicated to hillwalking, mountains and outdoor adventure.
It probably won’t surprise you to hear that everyone who’s had the good fortune of working on Trail has loved creating it as much as you’ve hopefully loved reading it. It’s been the absolute job of a lifetime for all of us, and in many ways has taken over our lives in the best possible way.
We’ve climbed every mountain you’ve read about in our pages, slept in all those ridiculous places we’ve photographed, fiercely debated every bit of kit we’ve ever reviewed, interviewed all of the mountain experts and legends who have graced our pages – and absolutely loved every second of it.
Decisions like this don’t get taken lightly, and the magazine isn’t closing because we’ve lost interest, or fallen out of love with hillwalking. The pressures facing the media industry and the wider economy have simply made it impossible for us to continue creating a magazine of this quality, to the standard we demand of ourselves.
To all of our loyal readers, some of whom have been with us since Issue One, we say a huge and heartfelt thank you. You’ve been the heartbeat of Trail from start to finish, inspiring us with your letters, photos and stories, and challenging us every month to make the best possible magazine every four weeks.
To all of the talented, passionate, brilliant people who have played a part in Trail’s success over the past three and a half decades, we simply couldn’t have done it with you. We’ve been lucky enough to work with the very best writers, photographers, designers and editors the outdoor industry has produced – so many it’s impossible to even start naming names here.
Our amazingly dedicated team has been working hard in the background to create a fitting final issue over these past few weeks, so we really hope you enjoy it. The cover image reveals our 2025 UK Mountain Photo of the Year winner, there are multiple articles dedicated to our iconic Trail 100 bucket list, a tribute to an all-time great British nature writer, and all of the usual routes, reviews, and regulars you’ll have come to expect.
So please pick up a copy and hopefully it will do what we’ve wanted every single Trail issue to do – fill your head with mountains to climb and faraway places to explore.
We aren’t completely going away, of course, because from now on we’ll be throwing all of our effort and energy into our fast-growing website www.livefortheoutdoors.com
Thanks again for supporting us all these years and we’ll see you out there.
